OVERVIEW:
Here’s an antique dated 1890 Dutch silver miniature tableau.
It depicts the old Dutch folk tale, “The Lady of Stavoren”.
In short, the story tells of a Stavoren widow who, dissatisfied with her vast wealth, greedily commands the captain of one her many ships to find her even more riches.
He returns with a large quantity of wheat grain (considered by the captain even more precious than gold), which the widow disgustedly orders tossed into the sea.
Ultimately, the discarded grain grows into a fertile island.
The island’s sandbank renders Stavoren unreachable by ship; trade business craters and the town becomes destitute.
The widow ends up penniless.
This piece depicts the captain presenting a crate of grain to the widow, who probably expects a chest of jewels.
The backdrop features several engraved scenes and the title “VROUWEJE VAN STAVORE”.
MARKS:
this is stamped with various Dutch hallmarks (including 1890 date letter) and English import marks (also including 1890 date letter), with mark of importer David Bridge
